Virtual Global Media Awards celebration connects global media industry

Last week, INMA announced the winners of the 2021 Global Media Awards competition, rounding off the 91st Annual INMA World Congress of News Media held virtually throughout May.
After experiencing nine years of Global Media Awards events held across the world, I’m happy to report that the spirit of the competition has not wavered amid the pandemic-prompted transition to a virtual broadcast. In fact, I think it’s been amplified. Celebrations and congratulations poured in on Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn after the announcement Thursday and have continued throughout the week.

While winners could not take their trophies on tours of New York as they did when we last gathered in person, we’ve seen that some of the crystal prizes have already made their way to their new homes. Kevin Young, head of audience at The Economist, shared that his company has already received the first place award it won in the Best Use of Social Media category.

There are many wonderful things I appreciate about the Global Media Awards. It provides the opportunity to showcase exceptional work, highlight impactful outcomes, and reward teams for their hard work. I'd also be lying if I didn't admit I missed gathering with everyone at the usual glamourous gala dinner this year. But, luckily, my favourite aspect was more present than ever: the rally of support and excitement from the industry, friends of winners, and even those that did not land first place in their category.

Thank you to everyone who shared their joy with us across social media over the past week. While I have loved gathering with you all virtually for the past two years, I look forward to celebrating together in New York in 2022. And, for the record, I agree with The Irish Times' audio producer Jennifer Ryan in her tweet below — let’s make emergency champagne a thing.

If you missed the virtual awards ceremony, you can watch it here. Cheers!
